At the 26.5 km marker of the Taiwan Provincial Highway 6, there was a small country road on the left side. Turning onto this road takes you straight to Mt. Da-Lu-Keng. Once there you will see many lodges and restaurants, each of them having unique features. Peter and I originally planned to ride our motorcycle up the mountain but the slope was too steep, so we walked uphill instead. We had to walk so slowly in some places because of the heavy incline that even a caterpillar passed and said hello to us.

As we continued up the mountain we could now see the bamboo forest and the beautiful Tung blossoms on branches protruding from the adjoining mountainside.  Many artifical deer along the path guided us through this mysterious place on our way to the lodge. The trip up the mountain on foot took about 40 minutes to finally arrive at the Tung Lodge. We were lucky to see their 40-year-old Tung tree prominently displayed in front of the building. Tourists packed the area so much that we decided to go home. Vehicles jammed the narrow mountain road all the way back down. The Tung blossoms were so breathtaking that people blocked the roadway just to get a short peek.

Original:

Mt. Da-Lu-Kang was originally famous for deer hunting for many years. Due to the extinction of the Taiwan wild deer, the local people planted a great deal of Tung trees, rice, and bamboo. Unfortunately, these plants were not as valuable as they had anticipated so Mt. Da-Lu-kang became desolate. Afterwards, a developer made a large investment into the area, using environmentally friendly techniques to protect the ecology system. Mt. Da-Lu-kang has since turned into the popular resort and tourist attraction.
